Carpe Diem

Carpe Diem is a so-called “Slup” with a single mast for the mainsail and a separate foresail. It was built in 1997 by the german shipyard “Bavaria” in Giebelstadt and is certified for high seas by the German Lloyd. I am the third owner ever since. The hull is made of high strength plastic (GRP) and is approximately 10 metres long and 3,25 metres wide. The mast has a height of 14 metres over water. The draft is 1,70 metres with a short ballast bulb keel.

    1. Hi Geoff, thanks for your message. In fact i planned to install a second forestay but after all i did not, cause the efforts for that were just to high. So i sailed with just one forestay and made it home save :-). Best wishes Guido

    I have really enjoyed your videos and congratulations on your crossing the Atlantic, very inspiring. I have a question … you mentioned above that you fitted a second forestay what was your setup for this and how did it function? I couldn’t see the second forestay in the videos.

    Just one question: can you tell me, please, which windvane selfsteering system you’re using? It seems to work really great for you, and I’m purchasing a Bavaria as well (Cruiser 37). I would be very grateful to have your recommendation.

    Congratulations to your crossing, really amazing trip.
    Now I’m going to start yacht sailing, and I tried to find videos about yachting and found yours. You made a great job, it is more than just video – it is a masterpiece. I watched others and they were a little bit boring…..Your videos made my day. Now I’am watching them again and again to learn more about living on board, working on board, sailing, mooring, radios and so on….
    Thank you very much for that! You finally convinced me that sailing is the thing I need.

    congratulations on your Atlantic crossing and thanks for sharing this very well prepared and informative videos. I see that you have a simple but yet functional IT setup on your laptop for weather forecasts, chart-plotter (I assume it is OpenCPN), AIS etc. I would appreciate if you could describe your navigation system and what software/hardware/internet/etc you have been using.     1. Hi Borjan, you are right … it`s quite simple. I used the following setup:

      – SAMSUNG Netbook NC10
      – FUGAWI ENC 4.5 Navigation Software
      – NAVIONICS charts on SD-card
      – GPS antenna (outboards) via USB
      – COMAR AIS receiver via USB (antenna outboards)

      The weather files are actually grib-files from zygrib, which is a free service. The files are downloaded via Iridium satellite phone (attached to a second notebook). This works quite good cause the files are highly compressed and very small.

      Weather and AIS information can be imported as a chart- overlay into the FUGAWI software.
